This is a picture we took at the Midori HQ in Tokyo, in march 2011. It was beyond our expectations, the color of the leather is just so beautiful. We are busy folding origami cranes. Of every crane we will donate 100% to the Japanese Red Cross. These origami cranes have a handwritten thank you message and are available in white, kraft and a variety of light coloured paper. You can help and buy your origami crane here.

In Japan the Crane bird represents longevity, hope, happiness and contentment (of satisfaction). Traditionally they will fold a thousand Crane birds in times of illness or other misfortune. During the process all of the folder's postive energy will be sent to whomever needs it.

Brigitta, of Miscellaneous, was in Tokyo at the time of the first earthquake on March 11th 2011: "I was in a train near Yokohama at the time of the first quake. At first I did not realize the shaking was a earthquake. Only when I stepped out of the vehicle it hit me. However I only learned about the severity of the earthquake many hours later." She returned safely to Amsterdam, but wants to contribute: "With this gesture I would like to support Japan in their fight. We need to help each other in such times."

I am in Berlin for the moment. And again I had dinner at Pappa e Ciccia on the Schwedterstrasse again.
I've been there a couple times before, and I still love it there.
The dinner was great again, there Italian kitchen with a lot of bio ingredients tastes so pure en simple.
Just how a Italian dish should taste, and it is made with a lot of love!!!!

Indoor Greenhouses for your herbs

Although a small herb garden is often advertized for beginner-gardeners, I find it hard to keep them alive. I usually either over or underwater them (or use the herbs too fast!)

If you have that same problem, you are in for a treat. Several small 'greenhouses' are recently launched on the market to help you not to murder your herbplants within a weeks time.

The Floratube is a small, low maintenance “biosphere reservation” for herbal cultivation. The idea for the floratube originates from the “Wardschen Kasten” (Wardian Case), an invention from the 19th century which allowed exotic agricultural and ornamental plants to survive long ocean voyages aboard ship.
The mini-greenhouse is composed of only a ceramic base and a simple glass bell. This hermetically seals the contents in so that no moisture can escape. The plants which thrive in the floratube therefore only need a well-lit position and a little water every few weeks at the most – meanwhile you can take a harvest again and again. This makes floratube (not only, but also) a smart and useful living accessory for the modern, design-orientated city dweller who, despite not having his or her own garden, can still have a crop of fresh kitchen herbs available at all times.

The Hydro Herb pot from Rosti Mepal has a hydro system that you only have to fill once or twice a week. Through a cotton cord the herbs will take up the amount of water they need.

Sagaforms Herb pots is my favorite of the bunch. It comes in three sizes: for a single herbplant, or double or triple. Just store your plant in the ceramic pot and water it through the hole. It selfwateringsystem will do the rest!

The Herb Savor from Prepara stores your fresh bundlle of herbs. It will guard your herbs for about three weeks in the fridge. This means that when you do buy herbs in the store, you do not have to throw it away, as usually pre-cut herbs don't last long but are sold in 'bulk'. Prepara also has a greenhouse that enables you to sow and harvast your own herbs year-round.

If you ever want to go to the German Alps, I would highly recommend staying at the unbelievable Moormann Berge. This old warehouse has been transformed into 13 individual apartments that can be rented out. There's no staff, but the facilities are great.

Lots and lot of books to read, one step outside the door and you are in the middle the magnificent nature.

There s a communal garden for all the renters, good restaurants nice shops in the neighborhood.

All the ingredients for a nice holiday are there.

The apartments are so nicely decorated, in a way you wish your house looked like that.

A new restaurant openend his doors a couple weeks ago in Amsterdam.
In the new and up coming neighboorhoud called oost you can find cafe restaurant "de Wilde Zwijnen"
On the corner of Javaplein "de Wilde Zwijnen" is a nice suprise.
When you enter the space, you are suprised by the homy and cosy atmosphere they created.
The menu is a mix of the french kitchen made of real Dutch ingredients.
I celebrated my birthday there this year with a small group of friends.
Had a nice evening.
Did you also enjoy "de Wilde Zwijnen" as much as I did?

Since three months Moise store opened his doors in the Warmoesstraat in Haarlem.
I am very glad that Moise store is located in Haarlem, it makes it even ore attractive to there.

Smalle Haven Eindhoven

During the last Design week in Eindhoven, I found the Smalle Haven by accident.
I note it as one of my favorite restaurant right now.
The atmosphere they created there is magnificent, the crowed is a good mix of everything and the food they prepare is daily fresh from the market.
They don't have a menu card, but the chef is explaining to every costumer what he bought that day on the market, and what he can make with it for you.
Enjoyed every bit of that evening. Next to the stunning food the Smalle Haven is so special because it is multi functional, next to the restaurant the space also functions as a gallery, and there is a shop.
When you go there in the future and you see anything you like, don't hesitate to ask because a lot of things are for sale.

On Emmas designblogg I read something about design studio Ateliering from Belgium.
They designed a 60 sq.m apartment in Ghent. I thought it looked new, fluid lines, innovative shapes really interesting.
I went to there website and saw the they designed several nice objects.

I really like the bookcase called "Brique".
It is composed of simple and individual building element. The placements of these element determines the shape of the bookcase. Love the outcome of the elements all together, the clean and simple element combined together gives it a slightly chaotic and interesting character.

I would love to have on.

Haider Ackermann to launch menswear

The Paris based designer Haider Ackermann announced that he will launch a menswear collection.
His first mens looks are planned for the Pitti W Florence in June.
He is on of my personal favorites, I like his avantarde, dark style.
His use of colors and materials in combination with his constructions make it for me little peaces of wearable art. I am looking forward to see how the Haider Ackermann men will look like.

Ellen Truijen designs beautiful leather bags and accessories.

Her designs are timeless, sober, clean and simple.

She uses real high quality leather coming from Italy, and the whole collections is manufactured in the Netherlands.

You can find her bags in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Italy.

Together with Caramel, Ellen Truijen opened a shop in Maastricht, called Mos.

It is an elegant and refined place, with men's and women's fashion, accessories, and they also sell a nice collection of porcelain, books, and a special collection of "unmentionables".

Vanessa Bruno is a from origin Scandinavian, and now based in Paris designer.

She started her career in fashion as a model, and at the age of 24 she decided tot start her own line.

Her designs are clean, simple and pure,

and her clothing is easy to wear, comfortable, pretty and flirty.

She's one of my personal favorites.

Diptique is a Paris based company, they produce a range of scented candles, perfumes and body care products. Diptique was founded in 1961 by three friends, painter Desmond Knox-Leet, set designer Yves Couselant and Christiane Gautrot, who was working in an architecture firm.

By origin Ditpique produced printed fabrics, but in 1963 they introduced a line of scented candles wich eventually became the main focus of their company.

After this success they introduced more body care products.

Around the world there are 6 Diptique stores based in Paris, Londen, New York, San Fransisco, Doha and Dubai.

Personally I am a huge fan of the scent Baies, love it.

This blog shows amazing vintage pictures.
On the "100-year-old photo blog you can find pictures taken from 1850 until 1950.
They are scanned in a high resolution, so they can be used for many goals.
When you click on it you will see an enlarged image,and miraculously more details will a pear.
Feels like going to the dentist, I started at the same drawings for many years, and found something new every time.

The in Osaka based company combines sustainability with a European retro look.

They developed a whole range of furniture.

In Japan already a well known brand, and for hear say it will not be long until Trunck conquers the European market.

Lisa Congdon is well on her way with her a collection a day project. On this blog she documents a project that will span exactly one year, from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010. On each of those 365 days, she will photograph or draw (and occasionally paint) one collection. Most of the collections are real and exist in her home or studio; those she will photograph. Others are imagined; those she will draw or (occasionally) paint.

So far, she already gave us 128 collections, 237 to go!

Graanmarkt 13 Antwerp

In februari of this year the doors of a new place called Graanmarkt 13, in Antwerp opened his doors.
Ilse Cornelissens and Tim van Geloven are the brains behind this project, the wanted to create a concept with an international atmosphere and challenging atmosphere.
Graanmarkt 13 is located in a house with three levels. On the first floor you can find the restaurant, were you can go for a coffee, a glass of wine, are have lunch/dinner.
On the second floor you can find the store space, with high street clothing brands, accessories, perfumes, and design objects.
And on the third floor they made place for a gallery space were young talents can expose there work.

Fashion Show Academy Antwerp 2010

I ve you want to enjoy the creations of new and up coming talent in fashion, and get inspired, you need to go the the fashion show of the Fashion Royal Academy of Fine Art in Antwerp. Belgium is a well known country in fashion.
Between 1980-1981 a group of influential avant garde fashion Designers graduated form the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, called the Antwerp Six. Ann Demeulemeester, Walter van Beirendonck, Dirk van Saene, Dries van Noten, Dirk Bikkembergs and Marina Yee put Belgium in the spotlight.

On absolutely beautiful things I saw this picture.
It gave me a real spring feeling. Like the lazy atmosphere is breaths, and the green color palet. I can see myself sitting there with friends, drinking good wine, eating nice food and telling each other stories until dawn.

Jones Arnhem

Since 1988 Jones is based in the city center of Arnhem, in an old printing office.
For nice pieces of AF Vandervorst, Maison Martin Margiela, Ann Demeulemeeter or Sophie D Hoore and many more, you need to go there. Besides the clothing you can buy there, they also sell a nice range of bags, shoes, perfumes and other accessories. The nice atmosphere created by the founders Judith ter Haar and Gerhard Harmsen makes you feel really welcome. You can expect personal and genuine help of the Jones-team.

Vertical Gardening

I know my home city is quite progressive, but still, I was surprised to read that the local government of Amsterdam is subsidizing (!) large scale installations of vertical gardens. Now how is that! With a minimum of 40sqm the local government will pay up to 20.000 euro's (half of the total installation costs). Go Amsterdam!

Hopefully, the French botanist Patrick Blanc can be commissioned. On his site you can view the impressive list of his projects around the world.

Indoors you can install your own vertical garden with Woolly Pockets from the US. Flora Grubs installation below is too big for my living room, but is an excellent source of inspiration nonetheless.
